Illegal e-dumping lands Executive Recycling ceo in jail

United States: Following the illegal exports of more than 100 000 cathode ray tube (CRT) devices, US recycling firm Executive Recycling's owner and ceo has been sentenced to 22 months in prison.

The criminal case received high-profile media coverage such as a segment in the popular TV show '60 Minutes'. The illegal activities of the Colorado-based recycler first came to light in 2011, when Executive Recycling was dumping containers full of e-scrap to Asia – notably China – 20 of which were tracked by the US watchdog the Basel Action Network.

The verdict in the notorious e-dumping case comes after being tied up in appeals court for four years. While this is a breakthrough, the unlawful treatment of e-scrap represents 'just a sample of the US toxic e-waste flowing offshore', so warns Basel Action Network executive director Jim Puckett.

Greenpeace estimates that between 50-80% of US waste, mostly e-scrap, is exported to developing countries.
