Copper price averages US$ 8811 in 2011
According to data from the International Copper Study Group (ICSG), the refined copper market balance for last October showed a production deficit of 82 000 tonnes. This can be attributed to high Chinese usage, which was 25% higher than the average for the preceding nine months and 50% above that of October 2010.

Boliden AB is incorporating a silver recovery process into its Kokkola zinc smelting operation in Finland. Depending on the content of the raw material, this will result in the recovery of around 25 tonnes of silver per annum.

London Metal Exchange launches LME swaps
The London Metal Exchange (LME) has launched LME swaps for all of its non-ferrous metals. The financially-settled contracts based on the average monthly price are the first of their type to be traded on-exchange in the world. They are designed for participants of the physical industry who need to hedge the monthly average price.

Guilty pleas over US$ 2.6 million metal theft
Three men - Thomas Jefferson, James Robinson and Alan Verschleisser - have pleaded guilty to charges in connection with a scheme to steal imported metal worth US$ 2.6 million from the Port of Baltimore in the USA. Sentencing is expected in April.
