Honduras raises PET recycling profile thanks to Herbold Meckesheim

Honduras: Honduras now has a 80%+ collection rate for PET bottles, reports German manufacturer Herbold Meckesheim, which helped boost the country's recycling efforts by installing a new PET bottle recycling plant for recycling firm INVEMA to produce bottle-to-bottle quality with FDA approval at the end of last year.

In the first expansion stage the plant is processing 2000 tonnes per month. The output is thermoforming PET film suitable for use in the food and beverage industry. After regranulation, INVEMA sells the material to the a local Coca Cola bottle producer.

The hot washing treatment guarantees high-quality PET bottle flakes, says Herbold Meckesheim. Another important step is its hydrocyclone separation solution.

Herbold Meckesheim adds that Honduras has to import extra PET bottles to operate the plant at full capacity.

Additionally, equipment was installed for treating the polyolefine fraction from the recycling process, such as the caps and labels of the bottles.
