Sprint breaks Guinness phone recycling record

United States – Kansas-based e-scrap recycler Sprint has shattered the previous Guinness record for recycling the most mobile phones in a single week by processing 103 582 of the devices – more than doubling the previous record of 50 942 set by AT&T in 2011.

According to Sprint, which is the third-placed US company in Newsweek’s annual Green Rankings, success resulted from its widely-embraced take-back programme Sprint Buyback. In fact, the company was the first wireless carrier in the USA to establish such a programme, supplying an instant credit for eligible devices from any carrier in Sprint retail stores. Today, more than four out of every 10 customers participate in the programme, the company says.

Since 2001, Sprint has been able to reclaim enough mobile devices to divert 12.5 million pounds of e-scrap from landfills; it is now aiming to reuse and recycle an additional 100 million pounds of e-scrap in 2013 and 2014.

‘We are committed to keeping old cell phones out of landfills and are so pleased that our customers supported us during this record-setting week, as they regularly do throughout the year,’ comments Jaime Jones, Sprint’s senior vice president of consumer sales.
